Argyle Has Been on Golf Courses for a Century

The pattern is argyle, and it is not a decorative accident. It derives from the tartan of Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland, worn on kilts and in the patterned "tartan hose" of Highlanders since at least the 17th century. Knitting turned the woven grid into the interlocking diamonds with diagonal overcheck lines we recognise now.

It reached golf in the 1920s. Pringle of Scotland commercialised the knitwear, the Duke of Windsor wore it on the course, and the pattern went from clan marker to golf-course staple in about a decade. Payne Stewart made it his signature on tour decades later.

One point of pedantry the name plays with: argyle and plaid are not the same thing. Plaid — tartan — is woven from crossing horizontal and vertical stripes. Argyle is the knitted diamond-and-overcheck design that grew out of it. Both are Scottish, and this hat is the second one.

One Size, and Why the Closure Type Matters

The rest of the build is the same reasoning applied elsewhere: the patch is sewn rather than glued, the wording is embroidered rather than printed, and the vents are laser-drilled through the fabric rather than being a mesh panel — which keeps the pattern continuous across the crown instead of stopping it at a seam.

Golfers who like the traditional side of golf style but would rather not look like they're trying to join a club. Argyle reads as heritage without reading as costume, and green-black-white goes with most of what people actually wear on a course.
